starting a project

Journal Entry: Mon Sep 3, 2012, 11:53 PM
I'll be a senior at my high school this year, and in order to graduate seniors need to complete a senior project. Now is when I tell you about mine. B0)

At the end of last school year, my art teacher and I sent a letter to a sales rep of Wacom, asking if the company would donate or lend 10-20 drawing tablets to my school in order to allow me to teach a digital art class to the students and public. In my studio art class I started taking in my tablet and doing digital work there. My teacher also got her first tablet at the beginning of that year. But so many of my classmates had never heard of or seen a tablet before, and were confused about digital art and how it worked. Throughout my experience with digital art, a lot of people seem to dismiss it when they hear it's done with a computer - they don't realize how much is really in control of the artist, and how it's really very like traditional art. So I decided to teach a digital art class.
The letter was recieved but never replied to, not entirely surprising, seeing as it would be incredibly generous and out of their way for Wacom to do this for our school. SO I've started fundraising the money to get tablets to teach the class. I'll be trying to earn atleast $780 in order to purchase 10 Bamboo Splash tablets. They are rather small, but they are designed to help transition between traditional and digital, plus they are the cheapest tablets Wacom is offering currently. ALL of the money I make from adoptables and commissions go towards this fund for my project. I have also started selling custom hand-painted shoes, and will shortly be putting those up and setting an etsy up for them as well.

Now let me elaborate on the class: I've only got a rough sylabi written up just yet, but I do know it's all working up to the final project - a charity art book. Each student will create a page (x1 page or x2 pages) for the book. YOU GUYS are invited to join in on the book, as well! More information on the book later, when more things are certain! TO TEACH the class I'm planning on giving the lessons on working on pages for a children's book I'm writing - about my little sister. She was diagnosed with acute leukemia when she was young, and battled the cancer with chemo therapy. The book is our story and it's purpose is to be there for other family's that have to battle cancer together as well. All procedes from the art book, the digital art class, and the children's book, as well as any additional money from fund raising, will be donated to the Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon, where my sister got her chemo and BEAT cancer.

As of now the project is still pretty up in the air until I get more time to talk with my project mentor, but that's the general idea. :0) School starts Wednesday and that's when more details will start falling into place.

OMG! This is so cool! You get to teach the class! Your teacher is awesome to let you do that! I always wanted to teach art!!!
I am really interested in your charity art book :D I'd love to participate!

And yeah I understand about students being iffy on digital art
It does take its own set of skills to color digitally and though it isn't the same as traditional it isn't as easy at it seems. The only thing that is a lot easier is linearting since you can just use the pen tool haha

This project is so awesome! I really love what you are doing! I wish I could of done that for my school haha XD

Are you going to teach your own individual class or is the teacher going to let you take over her class and teach digital art for a few days?

lapaa, this is really heartwarming and beautiful.
i knew that you had a golden heart, but really, this is really beyond. ;;♥ you are a beautiful person and i'm so happy that your sister is fine ;u; i love how you planned everything out already...! i'd actually love to hear more about it when you get more information ;u;

hnn... i feel a bit unsure if i should suggest this, but have you ever heard of monoprice tablets? they are incredibly cheap tablets compared to wacom. however, they also have REALLY good reviews - search around on google/etc and it's pretty much all positive. here's the link to them from the site: [link]
i haven't used them myself though i plan on getting one later for portability (i.. don't want to carry my intuos around ack) but hnn ;; just wanted to let you know since not a lot of people know about it apparently and it might save you a lot of effort and time! but i'm unsure about suggesting since i haven't personally used them, though. ;-;

regardless, best of luck lapaa<333

ah thanks for sharing, those are so good prices @__@ I would feel nervous getting them because of never using them before, either..
we're actually trying to see if maybe we can get a grant from the school for the tablets, then any fundraising money will just go to the charity.. but who knows if we'll get it or not x: this is something I'll have to keep in mind, especially if we're unable to get enough funds which I hope we will because wacom is what I know and use x__x

Oh man, that's so awesome of you Eddy. I think this is a really wonderful idea. It's a pretty big thing, actually since you've got such an elaborate plan on doing this.

Mmmm. About the art book though, you probably need to come up with the skeletal panel pages first before you ask someone to start drawing just so you can control the flow of the story more properly. Although I guess you've already thought about this.

I can try to help on your art book if your mentor says yes to it. I don't have any 'children's book' style though so that's why I said that I'll try X'D

Thanks a lot! :0)

I may be missunderstanding (sorry XD!), but with the art book, it doesn't really have a 'story' so much as just a theme. It's just a book of art :0) Everyone will draw inspiration from the theme, draw thei page(s), and it'll all be put together in a pretty book that people can buy to help charity!

I would LOVE that so much for sure <3 I'm hoping definitely to get some more experience digital artists involved, becuase my class will only have been at first (for the most part) since they started the class ha.. plus the more the merrier for the book <3 any styles will be accepted into the art book :0)))

Haha, yeah! That seems really hard XD at first the project WAS going to be the students making a page for the children's book, but I decided the art book would be better for them for so so many reasons - don't have to do the plot, they get to draw what they want, ect...

Definitely! :0D It's as good a time as any!

Ahahaha. A children's book made by several artists = insane collab. X'D

Mmmm. It can help if you probably set a theme for it too. I normally find it easier to think of something when I'm given certain words that should descrie the overall feel of a piece. ouo

Lapaa...-wipes tear from eye- You are an inspiration my dear. Your idea is amazing. I think it's time digital art is something everyone is familiar with. People have done the same to me. I tell them I draw on the computer and they tell me "oh well that's not really art" But the fact is, it really is!
Not only is your idea a good way to introduce digital art into schools, but your offering an art book that will help raise money for a charity. That...that is just above and beyond. My heart goes out to your sister and your family for having to fight such a terrible disease. I give props to the girl. She has to be pretty young if you're only a senior and she's your younger sister. Damn x.x"

I am making this my mission. To promote your commissions and dream! ^^ This will be my ultimate goal.
PLEASE note me with any links to sites, forums, ect. that you may put up about this whole thing. I want to help! <3
I'd be happy to help spam your esty shop around and spread this blog all around DA and tumblr and anywhere I can get it! ^^ Im your little slave! :D

O-oh dear, you are so wonderful to me D:!
Thank you so much for all this amazing support! It means so much to me, I can't even -- for sure cried a little reading this!
For my art class I'm taking, AP Studio Art, the point of the class is to create a portfolio to submit to the board - a drawing portfolio or design portfolio... and if you do anything digital, it automatically defaults into the design portfolio, which is silly because you can DRAW and focus on the basic drawing techniques of the drawing portfolio with your tablet, but I have to submit into design because I do digital work...
I hope maybe this will help to change their minds about it, too! Spreading awareness about digital art, I guess...
She was 9 years old when she was diagnosed! They actually misdiagnosed her at first, and said she had arthritus. Leukemia is a blood / marrow cancer, and it started in the bones in her arm.. When we were finally sent to see the only arthritus specialist in Oregon, she told us my sister actually had cancer. It was terrifying but also kind of a good thing : you can actually do something to try and beat cancer..
She battled and she won :0)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I seriously cannot thank you enough right now!!
I'll have way more falling into stone after school starts on Wednesday, and I'm table to talk to my project mentor about all of this!
This really means so much to me! You're awesome! :iconbrohugplz:

That is exactly why I think it's good you get the point across. There's so many that don't realise how complicated the world has gotten and that we can LITERALLY draw onto the computer. How do they think the animators do it now-a-days?! xD god people! -flails- People need to realise now more then ever that drawing digitally IS just as hard as traditional. It's just cheaper, faster, and better for the environment >D

Oh my god o3o that must have been terrifying. But yes, you have a point there, it's fightable -nods- Im glad to hear she battled and won. That's a great feat and Im sure she'll go far in life having already beaten such a troublesome disease. My grandmother and aunt have been battling thyroid cancer for a few years now. They've been trying hard, but so far no clear sign they're in the clear. They've caught it early though so they could take it out and get it out. -nods- Such strong people ;3;

You're SO welcome. Im happy to help someone who's willing to help others. You just gotta sware it'll happen! (of course that is if your mentor approves it can) ;3; I wanna see your idea come to life! <333

Digital art is in SO MUCH of our lives. People are often completely oblivious. Film media, animated or just live action special effects. Business logos. Video games. Food packaging. ALL packaging! Calendars, posters, book covers, note pads, t-shirts! It's just really..every where! Digital drawing may seem easier because it DOES have the help of a computer, but these are all tools, just like traditional tools, that the artist has to use for themselves. Getting used to a tablet is REALLY hard in my experience, too. It takes a lot of hand-eye coordination and even more practice. It's convenient because of infinate copies, easy edits, and of course, like you said, much better for the environment! ;0) Sketching out an idea for any one of these things traditionally would take ME atleast several sheets of paper just to kind of sort of get it going, most likely, and then different drafts, and if I wanted to resize or zoom or flip I have to use a light table or zerox machine.. So really digital drawing is almost the same as traditional, but more convenient. I definitely feel traditional art has some special that digital art will never have, but digital art also has something special that traditional will never have.

Haha, I didn't really know what cancer was at first... When my mom told me, I thought she was going to die. My sister wants to be a nurse practitioner now :0)
Oh no, that's so hard :c We were really lucky with my sister because we caught it early, and she was young. A doctor said to us once, if she was going to get cancer, THAT was the one to get, because her chances were best with it. I'm glad they're fighting and caught it early, and that they have you there for them! Keep me updated? ; 0;

I swear to you Maiyu, this is happening. I already started working on this with my mentor last year, it IS happening <3 The only things that are in the air, are little details that I need before I can get official things up and running. I promise this will happen! I'll do it for my sister and for your grandmother and aunt and for everyone who has been effected by cancer personally or through someone they knew and loved!

...Also it's very late and I'm excited and emotional and tired so please excuse any typoes... :iconuguufaceplz:

Yep. Exactly ;3 and I also feel traditional has a special feel and vice versa. I think it's cause traditional is an artwork you can touch and feel and examine close up. And the styles some give off like watercolor and copics, just can't be re-created in digital art. Digital, you can only look as close as the computer or print will let you. but slowly people will learn that digital art can be printed just like any other art and can. I don't think traditional will ever die off cause it's far more convenient then digital, but digital will not only help the environment, but it will keep art alive for years to come. A digital piece of art can't wear down, get torn, or dirtied. It stays clean, crisp, and beautiful through all the years. x3

Lol really? well I guess I can't say I wasn't anymore oblivious when I learned my grandmother had it. I actually didn't even know for quite a few years. My aunt recently got it and I think my cousin has it too. But they couldn't be sure cause she's pregnant at the moment. So no way to actually tell right now. So almost 3 generations of my moms family with thyroid cancer and 5 already with thyroid problems in general x.x" jebus. xD
A-anyway. I think it's awesome of your sister to want to go into nursing now. My mother, grandmother, and aunt are all RN's and have been for like 20+ years now. They're all such loving women too. Im sure she'll do great. and I'll try to keep ya updated when I can. I try to stay updated myself. Im 2000 miles from home where my mom, sister, dad, grandma, grandpa, several aunts and uncles, and almost all my cousins are. ;3;

-sobu- ;3; you go paa-chan!! -flails- Mai will be here supporting you all the way! pushing you each inch!! -flails more- -sobs- ;~; I believe in you~!!

and yeah, same here xD excuse mine as well~ <3

Exactly! :0) And because with traditional, how there's only one copy of it, makes that one copy more special than if there were infinate copies lying around free on the internet, haha. All in all, both are incredibly worthy and beautiful mediums <3 people just don't know how digital art is made, so they assume it's just a computer magically doing it somehow, I guess XD

Oh, wow ! @__@ it sounds hereditarylawerkjawlekj ;;; how's your thyroid ? :c keep watch on it ! I have some thyroid issues but it's nothing as serious as thyroid cancer :c leukemia ran in my mom's family too.. I hope your cousin doesn't end up with it ! :c

Yeah I think people just see digital art as cheating. That you have a computer helping you make it look better. And while, yes, some use them to make the pictures better, most don't cause they've got the talent >D

lol it seems to be in my moms side at least. and im not sure. last i checked was like 4 years ago but It was fine then. i figured if it was fine then, its fine now -shrugs- i havent gained a LOT of weight but i have gained like 50 in the last 2 years i think. x.x" but thats cause i dont do anything. and even though i have the workout stuff downstairs, i dont do anything ;3; I just dont feel like doing it. i should. but i spend most of my time trying to find ways to advertise and make money from my bow business and journal skins -sighs- x.x"
Ah no...i talk to my mom on the phone mostly. none of my family gets on computers often. at least not my moms xD my mom will call me and update me on how things are going. like she just got a job after like a year of not having one. she's making 20 dollars an hour and taking care of a 3 year old. she's super happy xD my mom is SO good with kids. you'd adore her if you ever met her. she's pretty much a big teddy bear :3 she doesnt have internet or anything really right now. she's in the hole in fact. she has to catch up on rent and what not before even considering internet again x.x" -sighs- i feel so bad for her...i wish i could even send her money. but she has no sort of online payment options x.x" she sticks away from that to avoid identity theft lol. damn mama -shakes head- but neh, i get my info and it's okay. she informs me of anything major when it pops up. she does it asap too. thankfully she's the only one who calls me so its not a big deal for me to step out and talk to her xD

and yw~ <3

AHAHA, yeahhh ;; usually the 'cheating' tools that people can use though, DON'T actually look that good, is the funny thing XD;

Ah, yeah, it seems like if there was something wrong with your thyroid you'd know pretty fast, for sure. You live in a digital world, with your business. What're ya gonna do? Of course it would be great to try and get some time to do excersize too, and full-heartedly encourage you to try encorporating it into your life! (I'm trying to, too!), but you're busy trying to make a living online, yanno D0: it's not sitting watching friends on tv or something just cos you're lazy haha.. you do what you gotta do :0))
That sounds awesome! Your mom sounds awesome..
I'm really really glad that she got a job and is happy and calls you :0))) you two sound adorable !
